We source the highest quality black and green Assam teas from the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Assam, India, led by Avantika Jalan, a fourth generation tea grower who oversees the organic tea cultivation at Chota Tingrai as well as leads the social and sustainability initiatives at the estate.
The Chota Tingrai Tea Estate
Every tea plant on the estate is nurtured with organic compost generated on its land. In addition, while delivering the finest Assam teas across the world, the estate stays committed to the welfare of the local tea growing communities.
The Chota Tingrai Tea Estate produces some of the highest quality teas in Assam which is said to be home to India’s indigenous tea plant variety, camellia sinensis var assamica. The tea estates of Assam are also steeped in history, as the large-scale cultivation of tea in the region was started by the British East India Company in the 19th century. Assam’s location at the foothills of Himalayas, graced by the flow of the Brahmaputra river, combined with humid atmospheric conditions and heavy rainfall, make for a fertile rich soil at a low altitude. Chota Tingrai is special in the way that it brings together the hand-selected, premium Assam leaf with the Japanese methods of factory processing of tea.
In addition to carefully nurtured and hand-picked orthodox Assam black teas, green tea production at Chota Tingrai is unique too. The leaves are steamed (following a Japanese tradition of green tea production) and slow-dried giving them a light fruity and vegetal flavor, with a mellow sweet taste at the end of every sip.
